Ask A Lawyer June 9, 2026

(1 SHRM PDC and 1 HRCI Business)

Before the pandemic, when we met in person for our Chapter Meetings at Gardner Village, Salt Lake SHRM provided a one hour “Ask a Lawyer” hot topic roundtable. The Ask a Lawyer table has been a great value add to our Salt Lake SHRM Members.

Hosted by one of our Co-Directors of Legal Affairs, Rob Coursey, Tim Kegan or Mark Tolman, the Ask a Lawyer table presents an opportunity for our members to pick the brains of our employment law specialists, all while Rob, Tim and Mark are “off the clock.”

Please join Rob, Tim and Mark, and come prepared with your employment law questions for them!

Disclaimer:  Although Rob, Tim and Mark will try to respond to your employment law questions with general legal information, Rob, Tim and Mark cannot provide specific legal advice or legal opinion in this setting.

About Rob Coursey Esq SPHR SHRM-SCP

Rob’s been an employment lawyer for over 25 years. He spent his first 10 years at the top-tier employment law firm of Fisher Phillips, where he defended companies in employment-related litigation. He then spent 11 years at Employers Council, where he focused on keeping employers out of the courtroom. In 2021, Rob started his own company—Modern Age Employment Law—where he counsels, represents, and trains employers who care about treating their employees right.

Rob has an English degree from George Mason University in Virginia, and a law degree, with honors, from Georgia State University College of Law in Atlanta.

Rob’s licensed to practice law in Utah and Georgia. He’s also a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).

One of Rob’s favorite things about being his own boss is that it allows him to give significant pro bono time to various nonprofit and civic organizations, including serving on the Boards of Salt Lake Society for Human Resource Management and several Utah Bar committees.

Beyond being a lawyer and business owner, Rob’s a father of four, a music lover who regularly travels around the country for concerts, an OK drummer who still dreams of being a rock star, a daily meditator and certified meditation teacher, and can be found moving his body in some way as often as possible.
