Resources: Workforce Readiness
MESA/STEP
For the last several years, companies have recognized a shortage in the availability of new entrants to the workforce that have strong science and engineering skills. This is something that educators have known for some time and have stressed that we all must work towards developing these skills in our students. MESA/STEP helps fill this void and brings to light a team dedicated towards gaining the assistance of educators as well as corporate America.
Founded in 1985, the Utah MESA/STEP Consortium is a nonprofit organization comprised of higher education institutions, businesses/industries, public school districts, government agencies, and community organizations who are interested in fostering math and science education among minority and female students. MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement) is a statewide Public Education program which works with targeted students in grades 7-12, who are interested in and capable of succeeding in math, science, and technology-related studies. The Utah State Office of Education currently coordinates MESA programs for about 3500 students in 12 districts and 3 charter schools. STEP (science, technology, engineering programs) is the higher education component which consists of: Salt Lake Community College, University of Utah, Utah State University, and Weber State University. STEP Directors work with graduating MESA students and others in the target population who are pursuing math, science, engineering, and related fields of study. Resources for students after school meetings, tutoring, college and career exploration, field trips, work readiness seminars, scholarships for students pursuing math, science, engineering, technology and related fields in college, internships, networking opportunities, mentoring, and social activities with other students. Utah companies such as Northrop Grumman, Abbott Laboratories Fund, ATK Thiokol Incorporated, Alcoa, Bard Access Systems, Becton Dickinson, Boeing, Chevron Texaco, Evans & Sutherland, Intel, Intermountain Health Care, IOMEGA, L-3 Communications, Litton, Micron, Moog, SPS Technologies, UNISYS, and Varian Medical Systems have provided scholarship funds and opportunities for internships and full time employment. While all students may participate in MESA/STEP, the program’s focus is on the target populations of African Americans, Latinos, American Indians, Pacific Islanders and women.
